How to Keep Your Koi Pond Clean

One of the priorities that a Koi keeper should keep in mind is maintaining the cleanliness of the Koi pond. Because the water in which the fish live is basically where they do all things—eat, feed, sleep—keeping it clean ensures that your Koi live a beautiful worry-free life. Take note the pond also serves as the Koi’s bathroom, hence, the water in it should always be cleaned.

Your pond should be free from any suspended debris or floating matters. If one is not able to see the pond’s bottom, then that is enough to gauge that the pond badly needs a cleanup.

Every Koi keeper takes pride of his pond, hence, most of them exert effort to have it beautified with some landscaping—putting up some attractive blooms around it that goes well with the pond. But of course, it should not be forgotten that the main attraction remains to be the pond. And no pond is as beautiful as one thinks it is if it cannot sustain beautiful and healthy fish.

Your pond is designed to function as a natural water system for you Koi. But unlike these natural water systems, your pond will need a lot of maintaining and care. This is where those filtration systems come into the picture. They are needed to maintain the quality of the water in the pond. A pump system is likewise needed for the water in the pond to be regularly circulating.

Feeding contributes a lot to the waste one will get in the pond usually. One should not be obsessed about the Koi being always hungry and to feed them every time a Koi opens his mouth. A large amount of waste comes from this as a result of uneaten food or the Koi’s digestion process.

A good drainage system for your pond is also necessary. This will vacuum out unnecessary waste found at the bottom of the pond.

Another important aspect to think about is the fact that your pond is located outside; hence, there are other things that will contribute to your pond being dirty. Regardless of these factors, however, it remains your responsibility to keep the water in it as clean as possible for your Koi. Regularly skimming your pond for dirt and unwanted matter will keep your Koi healthy and stress free. Fish that are always stressed are more likely to get sick as opposed to fish that are not stressed and live in clean water.

By keeping your Koi pond properly maintained and the water clean at all times, you will be rewarded with happy and healthy Koi who will bring you and your family many hours of pleasure.
