The standards for evaluating koi body shape have evolved over time. The pursuit of a "high back" emerged in the process of emphasizing muscularity in koi. Initially, the "high back" referred to a pronounced elevation at the shoulder and back area, as exemplified by the raised, muscular koi bred in the Dainichi line.
Later, as the trend for larger-sized koi gained popularity, a different view developed. Some argued that the highest point of a koi's back should be at the main spine near the dorsal fin, as this body structure was believed to support greater overall size, seen in the robust, large-framed koi of the Sakai line.
These two interpretations slightly conflict, and it is nearly impossible for both traits to appear prominently in the same fish.
From the author's perspective, the elevation at the dorsal fin spine should be described as "body height" rather than "high back." Based on the original timing and literal meaning of the term "high back," it specifically refers to the highest point at the shoulder and back area. Therefore, pursuing a "high back" for muscular definition and increasing "body height" for larger size are two distinct concepts and should not be confused.
