Yes, it is not only acceptable but often recommended to feed pond-raised koi at night during hot summer weather. However, the practice should be carried out with consideration of the specific environment and scientifically informed feeding methods to avoid potential risks.

Rationale and Advantages of Night Feeding in Summer

  1. Avoiding Peak Heat Periods:
Daytime water temperatures in summer, especially in the afternoon, often exceed 30°C. Although koi metabolism is active under high temperatures, digestive efficiency decreases, increasing the risk of indigestion or enteritis if they are fed during this time. At night, as temperatures drop, water temperatures stabilize (typically around 25–28°C), optimizing koi appetite and digestive function.
  2. Aligning with Natural Behavior:
Koi rely on both vision and smell to find food. They can locate feed using their sense of smell in the dark without additional lighting, though gentle landscape lighting around the pond is also acceptable.
  3. Reducing Competition for Oxygen:
During hot summer days, dissolved oxygen levels in the water are lower. At night, as temperatures cool, oxygen levels recover, reducing respiratory stress on koi during feeding.

Important Considerations for Night Feeding

  1. Timing:
It is best to complete feeding within 1–2 hours after sunset, avoiding late-night feeding (e.g., after 10:00 PM) to prevent disrupting the koi's natural rest cycle.
  2. Controlling Amount and Frequency:
Avoid excessive feeding in a single session—still adhere to the "3-minute rule" (all food consumed within 3 minutes). A "small, frequent meals" approach can be adopted, such as feeding once in the morning, once in the evening, and supplementing with a light, easily digestible feed at night if daytime intake was insufficient.
  3. Observing Fish Behavior:
If the night is hot, windless, and the atmospheric pressure is low, dissolved oxygen in the water may be insufficient. In such cases, pause feeding or increase aeration in advance.
  4. Maintaining Water Quality:
Keep the filtration system running overnight, promptly remove uneaten food, and prevent decomposition from increasing ammonia buildup.

Suggested Summer Feeding Strategy Throughout the Day

  • Early Morning (6:00–8:00): Water temperature is cooler; feed 30%–40% of the daily ration.
  • Evening (18:00–19:30): Water temperature is suitable; feed 40%–50% of the daily ration.
  • Night (20:00–21:00): If daytime feeding was insufficient, supplement with 10%–20% low-protein, easily digestible feed.
  • Strictly Avoid Midday (11:00–15:00): Do not feed during the hottest hours.

Risk Warnings

Night feeding requires vigilance against oxygen deficiency stress. If the pond is densely stocked, has abundant aquatic plants, or the weather is humid and still, it is advisable to activate aeration equipment in advance and avoid using floating expanded feed (which tends to float and pollute the water if left uneaten). For keepers who feed regularly at night, periodically test water parameters (e.g., ammonia and nitrite) in the early morning to ensure levels have not risen abnormally.
