UV lamps cannot effectively kill parasite eggs due to dual limitations in their mechanism of action and the structure of the eggs:
  1. Physical Barrier
    Parasite eggs (such as those of anchor worms or Dactylogyrus) have a hard chitinous layer or gelatinous membrane on their surface, which is difficult for ultraviolet light to penetrate.
  2. Hidden Locations
    Eggs often attach to crevices in pond walls, substrate, or the undersides of aquatic plants. These areas have slow water flow and cannot be exposed to UV lamp irradiation.
  3. Limitations of the Mechanism
    UV lamps work by damaging DNA to kill bacteria and algae. However, parasite eggs are in a dormant state with extremely low metabolism, making them less sensitive to ultraviolet light.
  4. Insufficient Dosage
    Even if some eggs pass through the UV lamp with water flow, the brief exposure and insufficient UV intensity cannot meet the requirements for inactivation.
Simple Analogy: A UV lamp is like a "surface patrol officer" that can remove "bad actors" (bacteria, algae) floating in the water but cannot catch "lurkers" (eggs) hidden "behind cover" (inside eggshells) or in the "basement" (pond bottom crevices).
Recommended Response:
To control parasites, physical cleaning (scrubbing pond walls) and medicinal baths (using specific drugs targeting eggs) must be combined. Relying solely on UV lamps cannot achieve complete eradication.
