Hello! The quality grading of koi carp is a comprehensive evaluation system based primarily on five core elements: lineage, body conformation (body shape), texture/quality, pattern (markings), and swimming posture. While the specific criteria may vary slightly between different countries, associations, and competitions, the underlying principles are similar.

The following is a widely recognized comprehensive grading framework, generally divided from highest to lowest as follows:

Tier 1: Competition Grade / Supreme Grade

This is the highest grade, typically referring to koi eligible to compete in national or international grand championships (such as the All Japan Koi Shows) with the potential to win awards.
  • Lineage: From the top bloodlines of famous breeders (e.g., Sakai, Dainichi, Momotaro, Hoshikin, etc.), with clear pedigree.
  • Body Conformation: Well-proportioned skeleton, straight back, elegant fusiform (torpedo) shape. Perfect proportions between head, trunk, and tail peduncle, conveying a sense of power. Females are usually more robust.
  • Texture/Quality: Shiroji (white ground) is pure, glossy, and porcelain-like; Hi (red pattern) is thick, vibrant, and uniform; Sumi (black pattern) is jet-black, lacquer-like, and glossy. Overall skin has excellent luster, possessing a "teri" (sheen).
  • Pattern (Mon): Layout is highly artistic and balanced. For Kohaku, classic patterns like "Sandan" (three-step) or "Inazuma" (lightning) are clear and distinct, with proper "kiwa" (edge) and "sashi" (underlying color). For Taisho and Showa Sanshoku, the sumi distribution resembles an ink painting, featuring advanced configurations like "kawarimono" (wrapping sumi) or "menware" (face-splitting sumi).
  • Swimming Posture: Movement is steady, graceful, and effortless, exuding a regal presence.

Tier 2: Select Grade / High Grade

Excellent quality, forming the main collection for serious hobbyists and competitive in regional shows.
  • Lineage: Also from reputable breeders with good bloodlines.
  • Body Conformation: Very good body shape with no obvious defects (e.g., crooked mouth, spinal curvature).
  • Texture/Quality: White, red, and black are of high quality, clean and bright, though perhaps slightly less intense or luminous than the supreme grade.
  • Pattern: Overall harmonious and pleasing, but may have minor imperfections in details (e.g., sharpness of hi edges, placement of sumi spots).
  • Swimming Posture: Good swimming posture.

Tier 3: Ornamental Grade / Standard Grade

The most common grade on the market, suitable for the majority of koi enthusiasts for pond keeping and viewing.
  • Body Conformation: Normal body shape without major defects, but may lack robustness or perfect proportions.
  • Texture/Quality: Acceptable quality, but shiroji may be slightly yellowish or not perfectly pure; hi may be orange-tinged or dull ("muddy"); sumi may be grayish or scattered.
  • Pattern: Relatively common, lacking artistic impact, possibly unevenly distributed or too simple.
  • Lineage: Pedigree may be unknown or of mixed lineage.
  • Swimming Posture: Normal.

Tier 4: Cull Grade / "Tsuchibo"

Typically refers to koi with obvious defects, used for practice by beginners or sold in low-end markets.
  • Obvious Defects: Poor body shape (large head/small body, hunched back, etc.), muddy texture, messy patterns, dull colors, deformed fins, or health issues.
  • Low Ornamental Value: Primarily satisfies the basic desire to "have koi," with little emphasis on quality.

Key Priorities by Variety

Grading emphasizes different aspects depending on the variety:
  1. Kohaku (Red & White): Shiroji (White) > Hi (Red) Quality > Pattern > Body Conformation. Snow-white skin and thick, vibrant hi are paramount.
  2. Taisho Sanshoku (Taisho Sanke): Hi Quality > Shiroji Quality > Sumi Pattern/Layout > Body Conformation. The quality and distribution of sumi (especially shoulder sumi) are crucial.
  3. Showa Sanshoku (Showa Sanke): Sumi Quality & Pattern/Layout > Hi Quality > Shiroji Quality > Body Conformation. Powerful sumi patterns (menware, kawarimono) embody the Showa's boldness.
  4. Utsurimono (Shiro/Utsuri, Hi/Utsuri, etc.): Sumi Quality & Pattern > Body Conformation. Sumi should be strong and jet-black.
  5. Asagi/Shusui: Neat, uniform scale arrangement, pure color, with clear "netting" pattern on the back.
  6. Kinginrin Varieties (Kin/Gin Rin): The brilliance, uniformity, and brightness of the reflective scales are the primary indicators.

Japanese Competition Judging Criteria (Reference)

In Japanese professional shows, scoring is typically weighted as follows (total 100 points):
  • Body Conformation: 30 points (Foundation)
  • Texture/Quality: 30 points (Quality of White, Red, Black)
  • Pattern: 20 points (Design/Layout)
  • Swimming Posture: 10 points
  • Dignity / Style: 10 points (Overall presence/aura)

Advice for Beginners

  • Start Gradually: Beginners can start with "Ornamental Grade" koi to learn husbandry skills and gradually develop an eye for quality.
  • Prioritize Body and Texture: A healthy body shape and clean texture are the foundation of a beautiful koi. A fish with a great pattern but poor texture will never reach the top.
  • Trust Your First Impression: A koi that catches your eye usually has something special.
  • Choose Reliable Sources: Purchasing from reputable breeders or dealers provides better assurance of lineage and quality.
In summary, koi grading is a blend of aesthetics, genetics, and husbandry. As your appreciation deepens, you will gradually enjoy the pursuit of finding the perfect "balance" and "breathtaking" qualities among body, texture, and pattern.
