Adding magnesium chloride (often in combination with sodium chloride as a "sedative cocktail") during koi transport serves multiple protective functions, significantly increasing survival rates. Its effects are primarily physiological and chemical, not strictly anesthetic in the classic sense.
Core Mechanisms and Benefits:
  1. Neuromuscular Sedation: Magnesium ions (Mg²⁺) act as a calcium channel blocker at the neuromuscular junction. This gently reduces nerve signal transmission and muscle excitability, decreasing the fish's metabolic rate and preventing the violent, injurious thrashing that can occur due to transport stress. It induces a calm, sedated state, conserving the fish's energy.
  2. Osmoregulatory Support: The addition of magnesium chloride, combined with sodium chloride (common salt), increases the water's osmotic pressure. This reduces the osmotic gradient between the fish's body fluids and the transport water. Consequently, the koi expends far less energy on osmoregulation (pumping salts and water in/out), further conserving vital energy reserves for the stressful journey.
  3. Ammonia Detoxification (Most Critical): In the sealed transport bag, fish excrete ammonia through their gills and waste. Magnesium ions (Mg²⁺) react with ammonia (NH₃) and phosphate to form an insoluble precipitate called magnesium ammonium phosphate (struvite), effectively removing toxic free ammonia from the water column. This is a primary defense against the rapid ammonia poisoning that is a leading cause of transport mortality.
  4. Slime Coat Protection: The balanced salt solution helps stabilize the fish's slime coat production, maintaining this critical first line of defense against pathogens.
Application: A common and effective formula is a 0.1% - 0.3% solution of magnesium chloride (often with a similar concentration of non-iodized salt) in the transport bag water. It is not a substitute for proper fasting, oxygenation, and temperature control, but works synergistically with these practices. For true surgical anesthesia, other agents like MS-222 are used, but MgCl₂ is favored for transport due to its safety margin and multi-beneficial profile.
