In Japan, the three varieties — Kohaku, Taisho Sanke, and Showa Sanshoku — are commonly referred to as "The Big Three" (also known as "The Great Three"). In China, Taisho Sanke is usually called "White-based Sanke", and Showa Sanshoku is called "Black-based Sanshoku". These three varieties are the most fundamental types of koi: Kohaku exudes elegance, White-based Sanke appears refined, and Black-based Sanshoku commands a bold presence.
