Core principle: Equipment safety comes first; it is better to underfeed than overfeed.

Pre‑travel preparations (3–5 days in advance)
  1. Check equipment: Ensure the water pump, air pump, and heater (in winter) are working properly; clean filter pads.
  2. Stabilize water quality: Change 1/3 of the water, test ammonia and nitrite levels, and add nitrifying bacteria.
  3. Adjust feeding: Gradually reduce feeding and stop feeding one day before departure.

Response Based on Trip Duration
  • 3–5 days: Simply stop feeding; koi tolerate hunger well, and this is safer than overfeeding.
  • 5–10 days: Use an automatic feeder (set to 30–50% of the usual amount) and install a camera + power‑failure alarm.
  • Over 10 days: Have someone look after the pond (train them in advance) and keep a DC air pump/generator ready for emergencies.

Safety and Monitoring
  • Install cat/bird‑proof nets and infrared motion alarms.
  • Set up a waterproof camera to check on the pond via smartphone.
  • Keep emergency supplies such as oxygen tablets and chlorine dioxide effervescent tablets on hand.

Instructions for Caretakers
  1. Use a fixed container marked with feeding amounts and emphasize "less is better."
  2. Provide a checklist for equipment checks (e.g., whether the water pump and air pump are running).
  3. Prepare common medications with instructions for use.

After Returning
First observe the fish and test the water quality. Do not feed on the first day; gradually resume feeding from the second day onward, and inspect/clean the filter.
