Aeration must be strengthened in summer primarily due to the "high temperature, low dissolved oxygen, and high oxygen demand":
  1. Higher water temperature means less dissolved oxygen in the water
At 30°C, dissolved oxygen levels are about 30% lower than at 20°C, yet koi metabolism and oxygen consumption increase by more than 50%.
  2. Biological oxygen consumption intensifies
    • Algae consume large amounts of oxygen through respiration at night.
    • Decomposition of fish waste and uneaten feed accelerates, further depleting oxygen.
    • Active nitrifying bacteria also consume oxygen.
  3. Weather impacts
Before thunderstorms, hot, humid, and low‑pressure conditions make it harder for oxygen to dissolve in water, easily leading to koi gasping at the surface or even suffocation.

Key Points for Summer Aeration
  • Target: Maintain dissolved oxygen above 6 mg/L.
  • Timing: Recommend continuous 24‑hour aeration, especially intensifying during 4:00–8:00 a.m. and for 2 hours after feeding.
  • Equipment: Provide 3–5 W of air‑pump power per ton of water; use nano‑diffusers, focusing on the pond bottom and filter return areas.
  • Monitoring: Test dissolved oxygen morning and evening with a meter; increase aeration in advance during thunderstorms or stuffy weather.

Emergency and Supplementary Measures
  • Keep a battery‑backup air pump ready for power outages.
  • Have calcium peroxide on hand for emergency oxygenation.
  • Combine with shading (30–50% shade cloth) to control algae and reduce nighttime oxygen consumption.

In One Sentence: Summer aeration is a life‑saving measure. Continuous, adequate, and intensified during critical periods is essential to keep koi safe through the hot season.
