Air discs serve multiple functions beyond oxygenation: they regulate water flow, break up thermal and chemical stratification, and create safe zones for koi by preventing stagnant areas.
Optimal Placement Strategy:
  1. Filtration Chambers (Primary Location): For most hobbyists, the most efficient placement is within the biological filter chambers. This maximizes oxygen delivery directly to the beneficial nitrifying bacteria, which have a high oxygen demand for processing ammonia and nitrite. It also keeps the main pond view unobstructed.

  2. Main Pond (Secondary Location): A smaller, strategically placed air disc is still recommended in the main pond. Its purposes are:
    • Current Regulation: To create gentle circular currents that help direct debris toward the bottom drains and prevent dead spots.
    • Stratification Prevention: To disrupt thermal layering, especially in summer, ensuring oxygen reaches the bottom.
    • Safety Zone: To provide a highly oxygenated refuge for fish if the main pump fails or during hot weather when oxygen levels drop.

Configuration Tips:
  • Use a separate air pump for the main pond air disc to ensure it remains operational even if the filtration pump is turned off.
  • In the main pond, place the air disc in an area that complements the flow from the water returns, aiding overall circulation without creating excessive turbulence.
  • Ensure all airlines are securely anchored and hidden for both safety and aesthetics.
  • In very deep ponds (>1.8m), consider using a weighted "air lift" or diffuser wall along a side or corner to efficiently circulate water from the bottom.

This dual-zone approach balances mechanical efficiency, biological filtration support, pond safety, and visual appeal.
