A new concrete pond requires an acid soak because fresh concrete has a highly alkaline (high pH) surface. This alkalinity comes from calcium hydroxide (lime) and other soluble minerals that leach into the water. For koi, this creates a toxic environment that can burn their sensitive gills and skin, damage their protective mucus coat, and fatally disrupt their osmoregulation.
The acid soaking process utilizes acid-base neutralization to dissolve and remove these soluble alkaline compounds from the concrete's surface, thereby stabilizing the pH.
Critical Steps for Safe Acid Treatment:
  1. Initial Curing: First, fill the pond with fresh water and let it sit for 7-10 days, changing the water 2-3 times. This initial soak removes a significant amount of free lime.
  2. Acid Selection & Safety: Use a mild acid like white vinegar or food-grade citric acid. Never use muriatic (hydrochloric) or sulfuric acid due to extreme hazard and difficulty in neutralization. Wear full personal protective equipment (gloves, goggles).
  3. Application Process: Drain the pond. Apply a diluted acid solution (e.g., 1 part vinegar to 4-5 parts water) to all concrete surfaces using a brush or sprayer. Allow it to react (it will fizz) for 10-15 minutes, then scrub and rinse thoroughly with clean water. Repeat until the fizzing reaction stops completely.
  4. Final Neutralization & Testing: After the final rinse, fill the pond completely. Add a pH buffer (like sodium bicarbonate) to ensure the water is neutral. Test the pH daily for at least a week. The pH must remain stable (ideally between 7.0 and 8.0) for several consecutive days before it is safe for fish.
  5. Alternative/Best Practice: The most reliable method is to apply a fish-safe pond sealant or epoxy coating over the cured concrete. This creates a permanent, inert barrier that prevents any leaching and eliminates the need for repeated acid treatments.

This process is non-negotiable for the long-term health of koi, as it transforms a chemically hostile environment into a stable and safe habitat.
