While raising koi outdoors offers advantages such as fast growth, high yield, and relatively low investment, it has a critical flaw: the coloration of the koi often fails to meet standards, especially export requirements, which can significantly impact their grade and market value.
1. Causes of Color Fading
Based on extensive practical experience from koi enthusiasts and fishery experts, the primary reasons for color fading in koi are as follows:
(1) Genetic Degradation Due to Long-term Hybridization or Inbreeding
Continuous hybridization or inbreeding leads to the degradation of koi genetics, with color fading being a major consequence. Purebred koi typically exhibit superior traits, such as larger size, slender physique, vibrant colors, and distinct features. In contrast, long-term inbreeding or uncontrolled mating results in a proliferation of hybrid or degenerate strains, leading to significant variations in color and appearance.
(2) Poor Water Quality Leading to Color Fading
In outdoor environments, koi pond water undergoes changes—ranging from clear to green, mature green, clarified, and brownish. Turbid or deteriorated water can cause the fish's body color to become dull, monotonous, and lack vibrancy. Cultivating green water through appropriate lighting can help; well-maintained water should be bright, clear, and slightly greenish, which enhances the fish's coloration.
(3) Inadequate Diet Leading to Color Fading
A monotonous or nutritionally deficient diet impedes pigment cell deposition, resulting in dull, lackluster body color in koi.
2. Technical Methods for Color Enhancement Cultivation
Enhancing coloration can make koi more vibrant and their patterns more diverse. Common technical approaches include:
(1) Scientific Breeding
To produce high-quality offspring, isolate different varieties during breeding. Two methods are typically employed:
  • Same-variety male-female cohabitation: Keep multiple males and females of the same variety in one aquarium for natural mating.
  • Cross-variety separation: House males of different varieties together and females separately, then selectively pair suitable males and females during breeding to prevent excessive mating stress on broodstock and maintain genetic purity.
(2) Optimizing Water Quality Management
Regular water changes help stimulate color development in koi. Mature water aids in color stabilization and deepening. For pond-reared koi, green algae can enhance coloration. Consistently clear, filtered water also promotes richer body color.

(3) Balanced Nutrition and Diet
Ensure a proper mix of animal and plant-based feeds. When using formulated feeds, include color enhancers. During the juvenile stage, provide nutrient-rich animal-based feeds to promote vibrant colors and improve overall health. Additionally, incorporate spirulina into the diet, as it is rich in beta-carotene, which enhances scale brightness and color. For homemade feeds, adding nutrients is straightforward: directly include spirulina or vitamin supplements (e.g., multivitamin tablets) or other color enhancers. Key color enhancers include:
  • Kelp powder: Add 2%–3% to feed.
  • Spirulina powder: Add 1%–2% to feed for effective color enhancement.
  • Carotene: 0.1%–0.5% carotene significantly deepens and brightens body color.
  • Pumpkin: Adding aged pumpkin to formulated feed at 0.5%–1% enhances color.
  • Blood meal: Rich in heme, a natural color enhancer; add 0.1%–0.5% to feed.
  • Astaxanthin: A highly effective color-enhancing feed additive.
(4) Intensive Rearing in Small Enclosures
Approximately three months before sale, transfer the koi to a small concrete pond (around 20 m²) for intensive cultivation. During this period, manage feeding with high-quality diets and color enhancers, and artificially regulate water quality to achieve optimal results.
