Concrete PondsConcrete ponds are commonly used for keeping koi in gardens, parks, and breeding facilities. They can be constructed indoors or outdoors, typically in square or circular shapes using bricks or concrete. Common dimensions include 1 m × 1 m, 2 m × 2 m, 3 m × 3 m, 3 m × 4 m, and 4 m × 4 m. The water depth should be around 0.8–1.2 m, with a maximum depth of 1.0–1.2 m. For winter indoor overwintering, the depth can be increased to 1.5 m. The corners of the pond should be rounded to facilitate cleaning of the walls. For large-scale koi farming, ponds can be arranged in double rows with a central water supply pipeline. Each koi pond should have independent inlet and outlet systems for water intake and drainage.

Earthen PondsEarthen ponds should not be too large, preferably ranging from 0.1 to 1 mu (1 mu ≈ 666.7 m²). The water depth should be 1.0–1.5 m. Earthen ponds also require complete inlet and drainage systems. A rectangular shape with the east-west axis longer than the north-south axis is ideal, with embankment slopes at a ratio of 1:(1–1.5).

Earthenware JarsEarthenware jars are traditional containers for keeping koi. Common types include yellow clay jars, Tianjin clay jars, Yixing pottery jars, and Jiangxi porcelain jars. With a capacity of around 60 liters, they are suitable for raising koi fry and juveniles.

Wooden TubsWooden tubs, typically round and known as "wooden seas" or "fish basins," have been used since ancient times. They usually measure 0.7–1.5 m in diameter and 0.3–0.5 m in height. Wooden tubs are essential for koi breeding facilities, as they can be moved indoors for winter and relocated outdoors in spring.

AquariumsAquariums are widely used for keeping koi at home. Their shape and size can be customized as needed, making them a popular choice worldwide. Modern aquariums often feature integrated systems for water circulation, purification, waste collection and removal, aeration, sterilization, heating, cooling, lighting, and automatic temperature control. They are minimally affected by external environmental conditions, providing a stable habitat suitable for koi and other aquatic life by maintaining balanced water temperature and quality. Aquariums are ideal for displaying koi in exhibitions, hotels, restaurants, parks, and homes.
