High pH (Alkaline): Common in new ponds due to leaching concrete or limestone. A pH above 8.5 can cause chemical burns on gills and skin, leading to conditions like fin rot, ulcerations, and gill damage. It also increases the toxicity of ammonia.

Low pH (Acidic): Often results from excessive feeding, infrequent water changes, decaying organic matter, or inadequate filtration. A pH below 6.5 stresses the fish, weakens their immune system, and creates an ideal environment for parasites and harmful bacteria to thrive. The Ideal Range & Monitoring:
The optimal pH range for koi is typically between 7.0 and 8.5, with stability being more crucial than a perfect number. Sudden shifts of more than 0.5 within 24 hours are highly stressful. Therefore, regular testing (at least weekly) is essential.
