Dissolved oxygen testing in summer should be avoided during peak sunlight hours (typically 11:00–15:00) because the readings taken then are misleadingly high and unsustainable, creating a false sense of security.
At midday, under intense sunlight, algae and aquatic plants undergo maximum photosynthesis, injecting a large amount of oxygen into the water, especially in the surface layer. This can create a temporary, localized DO "spike" (often exceeding 10 mg/L). However, this peak masks two critical hidden dangers:
  1. Stratification Distortion: Summer heat causes thermal stratification. The warm, oxygen-rich surface layer sits atop a cooler, denser bottom layer with little mixing. A standard surface water sample will show high DO, while the bottom water—where fish often reside and waste decomposes—can be severely hypoxic (DO potentially <3 mg/L, below the critical 5 mg/L threshold for koi).
  2. Masking the Nighttime Crash: The high daytime DO reading fails to warn of the impending nighttime oxygen crash. After sunset, photosynthesis stops, but respiration from fish, plants, and algae continues, consuming oxygen rapidly. Without the daytime oxygen production, DO levels can plummet to dangerously low levels (<3 mg/L) within just a few hours after dark, risking fish suffocation by early morning.
Therefore, the most critical times to test DO are at dawn (the daily low point) and dusk (to gauge the trend before night). Monitoring at these times provides a true picture of the pond's oxygen-holding capacity and helps prevent nighttime hypoxia, which is a leading cause of summer fish kills.
