Asagi is a primitive and classic variety of Nishikigoi (brocaded carp). Its name, meaning "pale blue" or "light indigo" in Japanese, vividly describes its signature clear, bright bluish-grey back, reminiscent of an autumn sky.
Key Characteristics
The most distinctive feature of a high-quality Asagi is its net-like scaling: each scale on the back has a dark center and a clearly defined, lighter edge, creating a neat, reticulated pattern across the entire back. This is a crucial criterion for judging its quality.
The standard color distribution is as follows:

Most notably, it is the progenitor of the Shusui: the Shusui is a cross between the Asagi and the German mirror carp (Doitsugoi), inheriting the Asagi's colors but with the scaleless (or partially scaled) skin and large mirror scales of the German carp.
