When koi contract saprolegniasis (water mold disease), antibiotics are typically ineffective because they target the wrong type of pathogen. The disease is caused by water molds (oomycetes, traditionally classified as fungi), while antibiotics are specifically designed to combat bacteria.
  1. Mechanism Mismatch: Antibiotics work by disrupting structures or metabolic processes unique to bacteria, such as cell wall synthesis or protein production. They have no effect on the different cellular composition and reproductive mechanisms of fungal-like organisms.
  2. Negative Side Effects: Indiscriminate use of antibiotics not only fails to kill the water mold but also can harm the beneficial nitrifying bacteria in the filter. This disrupts the nitrogen cycle, leading to a rapid decline in water quality (e.g., ammonia spikes), which further stresses the already sick fish.
  3. Unnecessary Burden: Administering antibiotics places an additional metabolic load on the fish, potentially weakening its already compromised immune system.
Therefore, treating saprolegniasis requires medications specifically formulated for fungal-like pathogens, such as methylene blue, malachite green (use with extreme caution), or dedicated antifungal agents like those containing phenoxyethanol. The most effective approach combines the correct medication with improving environmental conditions—addressing the root causes like low temperatures, physical injuries, or poor water quality that allowed the infection to take hold.
