Fishery medications should not be mixed arbitrarily due to the potential for multiple hazardous outcomes. Different medications vary in chemical composition and pharmacological action, and mixing them can lead to chemical reactions, resulting in drug inactivation or precipitation, rendering them ineffective for treatment. More seriously, the combination of certain drugs can generate new, more toxic compounds that directly poison fish and may cause fatalities.

Furthermore, mixing medications can cause antagonistic effects, where one drug weakens or cancels out the therapeutic effect of another, rendering the treatment futile. Additionally, using multiple medications simultaneously significantly increases the metabolic and detoxification burden on fish, which is particularly detrimental to already sick individuals, raising the risk of poisoning or organ damage. Mixing drugs can also severely disrupt water quality by harming beneficial microorganisms (e.g., nitrifying bacteria) that maintain ecological balance, leading to water deterioration and further endangering fish health.

Therefore, unless there is clear guidance and scientific basis, arbitrary mixing of medications should be avoided, except in specific, well-informed emergency situations. It is always best to use medications sequentially after careful consideration, ideally under the advice of a specialist, and to closely monitor water parameters and fish behavior during any treatment.
