Upon detecting gill rot, it is crucial to immediately use a high-concentration chlorine dioxide treatment for sterilization. The disease progresses rapidly, and an entire pond of koi can be severely affected overnight.

Whether the gill rot is infectious (caused by parasites) or bacterial in origin, do not delay treatment while attempting to identify the precise cause—by then, it may be too late. Administer chlorine dioxide first to control the bacterial component.

Chlorine dioxide disinfection
Critical Action Steps and Considerations:
  1. Immediate Isolation (If Possible): Severely affected fish should be isolated in a treatment tank to prevent cross-contamination and allow focused care.
  2. Maximize Oxygenation: Gill damage severely compromises respiration. Drastically increase aeration during treatment, even adding multiple air stones, as the fish will be under extreme respiratory distress.
  3. Water Quality is Paramount: Perform a significant (30-50%) water change before medicating if possible, to reduce overall pathogen load and organic debris. Ensure pristine water parameters (zero ammonia/nitrite, low nitrate) throughout.
  4. Post-Sterilization Diagnosis: After the initial emergency chlorine dioxide treatment, carefully examine gill filaments under magnification if possible to check for parasites (like Dactylogyrusor Trichodina). A follow-up treatment with a targeted parasiticide may be necessary.
  5. Supportive Care: Consider adding vitamins (especially C and B complex) to the water or food to aid healing and reduce stress. Avoid feeding during the acute phase to minimize metabolic waste.
  6. Monitor Closely: Observe fish behavior constantly. Be prepared to adjust treatment or consider veterinary intervention if no improvement is seen within 24-48 hours.
Remember: Gill rot is an emergency. Speed, aggressive supportive care (oxygen!), and decisive initial action are key to saving the fish.
