However, this process simultaneously adsorbs and encapsulates dissolved medications in the water, causing the drug concentration to plummet. This drop prevents the medication from reaching effective therapeutic levels, rendering the treatment ineffective or causing it to fail. Furthermore, the settled floc—now rich in organic matter—rapidly decomposes at the bottom, consuming large amounts of dissolved oxygen, which further exacerbates conditions in an already potentially hypoxic environment during illness.
Additionally, water clarifiers can interfere with or even damage gill function, especially in fish already suffering from gill injuries. They may also disrupt the community of beneficial nitrifying bacteria, leading to fluctuations in key water parameters like ammonia and nitrite.
Therefore, while water clarifiers may make the water look clear, their use can severely interfere with treatment, worsen water quality conditions, and place an added burden on sick fish, hindering their recovery. It is always preferable to maintain clarity and quality through proper filtration and manual removal of debris rather than using chemical clarifiers during a treatment cycle. If clarifiers have been used inadvertently, a partial water change and re-dosing of the medication may be necessary, based on accurate pond volume calculation.
