"Sleeping sickness" is a common condition in young koi and generally not a cause for panic. Under normal circumstances, soaking the affected fish in a recirculating system with a salinity of 0.6% for about 7 days leads to recovery. During this period, simple water changes and salt replenishment can be performed, and minimal feeding is acceptable. After recovery, there may be some physical damage to the fish, but the disease typically does not recur.
The disease is highly contagious and spreads rapidly. It is crucial to strictly isolate any affected young koi from others immediately upon detection. Notably, "sleeping sickness" does not infect larger, adult koi. One episode of the disease usually confers lifelong immunity.
Important Notes:
  • Accurate Diagnosis: Ensure the symptoms (lethargy, lying on the bottom, possible fin erosion) are indeed "sleeping sickness" and not caused by other issues like poor water quality (high ammonia/nitrite) or severe parasitic infections.
  • Treatment Nuances: Maintain stable water parameters (especially temperature) and excellent water quality during the treatment week. Avoid overfeeding to prevent waste buildup.
  • Post-Recovery: Quarantine recovered fish for an additional observation period before reintroducing them to the main population to ensure full recovery and no secondary infections.
  • System Management: After an outbreak, thoroughly clean and disinfect the original holding system to eliminate any lingering pathogens before reuse.
